Playwright

Ruby Hutson-Ellenberg was born and raised in Queens, NYC. Don't worry if you forget that fact because she'll definitely mention it more than once. She uses the page to recreate the characters from her home borough.
Her chosen genres are dark comedies and absurdist plays. Frequent themes include women, desire, and people who never learn their lessons. If you've ever thought, "There's no way that can be funny," then Ruby has probably written a comedy about it.
She graduated from Northwestern University in 2021 with an MFA in writing for the screen + stage. One of her favorite graduate school experiences was teaching "Foundations of Screenwriting," at Northwestern for two quarters, teaching film structure and leading workshops for classes of 12 students.
Chosen by a committee consisting of Thomas Bradshaw, David Tolchinsky, Zayd Dohrn, and Erin Courtney, Ruby's play Kitchen Clinic was workshopped in 2021's Festival of New Works. Her short script Seat Stealer was a 2021 BlueCat quarterfinalist.
Her original play Eve and Her Neighbors won Hunter College’s 2015 Andrew and Eleanor McGlinchee second place prize for a play. It was later produced at The Kraine Theater on the Lower East side during The 2016 NY International Fringe Festival.
In 2020 Ruby interned for Cartel Pictures' Los Angeles development team, reading, summarizing, and analyzing scripts for production. She also interned for Mint Theater Company's New York production team before joining its crew for the 2013 Katie Roche production.
Ruby performs at storytelling open mics, perfects her bowling spin, and paddle boards in her free time.
